How Do I Ensure My Home’s Pipes Are Safe During Winter Weather?
12/25/2023 (Permalink)
The last things you need during freezing weather are burst pipes and floods! It happens more often than it should due to unprepared homeowners, so today, we’re sharing information so that it doesn’t happen to you.
Keep reading to find out how to keep the pipes in your North Nashville safe during the coldest months of the year.
What Are Top Tips I Should Follow To Keep The Pipes In My Home Free From Freezing And Bursting?
One of the most important preventative measures you need to know is how to keep pipes from freezing when winter weather threatens your North Nashville home.
- Frozen pipe prevention begins with determining where your plumbing leads throughout your home and locating your main water shut-off valve. The exact spot will differ depending on your house's age, but common locations are the garage, basement, laundry room, or yard. We recommend that you have your plumbing and heating systems serviced by pros yearly so you can stay on top of minor problems before they become more significant issues during a freeze.
- It's crucial to winterize your home and landscape when working to keep outdoor water pipes from freezing. Each fall, you should completely drain outdoor water lines to swimming pools and sprinkler systems, disconnect and drain all hoses, and close valves on outdoor hose bibs.
- Insulate the pipes in unheated exterior walls, basements, crawl spaces, and garages with foam pipe, rubber, or fiberglass insulation. Properly insulating rooms and addressing gaps in drafty windows should ensure your indoor plumbing remains at or above the minimum temperature.

How Will Water Damage Affect Your Historic North Nashville Home?
11/6/2023 (Permalink)
How Will Water Damage Affect Your Historic North Nashville Home?
Nashville is home to many beautiful historic homes, many of which are located in the northern part of the city. You may be a proud owner of one of these historic houses!
Historic homes require special attention to keep them in good condition, so today, we would like to talk about how water damage - a common problem in every home - can affect your historic house and how to keep it safe from this type of issue.
What Will Water Damage Do To My Historic House?
Water damage is an issue in homes, both new and old. Here are a few ways water can create problems in an older home:
- Plumbing systems are subject to damage and deterioration because of age and possible improper maintenance. As pipes age, more cracks and other severe deteriorations can occur, and these can cause significant water damage and potential mold infestation.
- The foundations of most older and historic buildings are masonry. Stone foundation walls with soft lime mortar are very durable, but the lime mortar does not hold up well to water erosion.
- Water currents and water traveling as underground "streams" can erode soil beneath foundation walls and footings. Although this situation is not common, when it does occur, the building's foundation will be destabilized, and repairs will be necessary. Evidence of structural destabilization is the appearance of cracks in the foundation walls and plaster or drywall above the foundations.
- Erosion from running water can also affect paving and sidewalks. From a building conservation perspective, the worst problem occurs when eroded slabs of asphalt or concrete channel water into, rather than away, from buildings. As with soil erosion, this can lead to water problems from future rains.
How Can I Keep My North Nashville Historic Home Safe From Water Damage?
Regular maintenance is always the best protection against damage to a home of any age.
- If your plumbing is original, it may be time to replace it. Older homes often have outdated plumbing, making them more prone to water damage and internal malfunctions.
- Proper surface and subsurface drainage lead water away from your foundation through grading and drains.
- Water damage to old brick is caused by splashback (continuous rain beating against the brick) or rising dampness (groundwater seeping up and into brick walls), leaving behind a tide line. The moisture above the tide line will evaporate eventually, but the remaining salt crystals will cause the mortar and bricks to break down over time.
- Clean your gutters regularly. A clogged gutter sends water cascading down the side of your house, further damaging the mortar joints and bricks.

How Do You Safely Handle Electronics And Appliances After A Flood?
9/25/2023 (Permalink)
Many of your household and workplace items may be affected by a flood, whether from a leaky pipe, a failed appliance, or a weather event.
Especially concerning will be your electronics; if these items aren't handled correctly, they can be destroyed, leaving you with the project of replacing them. Your insurance will cover these items in most cases, but the replacements can take time, which may mean inconvenience or loss of business!
Wet electronics can also be dangerous to handle, so it's vital that you know how to deal with this situation so that no one gets hurt. Keep reading to learn more about safely handling electronics after a flood.
Is It Dangerous To Handle Wet Or Damp Electronics And Appliances?
Water and electricity don't mix.
- It may be tempting to start up your washer and dryer if they have been affected by flooding to dry wet clothes, linens, or other washables, but don't do it. No matter how clean, water can damage an appliance's inner workings, including the motor. You'll want to contact a qualified service and repair expert to assess the damage.
- One of the worst things homeowners can do after a flood is attempt to air-dry their appliances and then turn them on. This can cause the device to short-circuit or, worse, shock the user, resulting in severe and life-threatening injury if there's moisture in the electrical components.
- Call in an expert to assess the situation and give you a diagnosis of your HVAC before using it. You'll likely need to replace your home's HVAC system if it's been damaged by water instead of having it repaired. Water corrodes, and this corrosion often leads to safety and reliability issues with your furnace, water heater, AC systems, gas, and electric.
Why Should I Rely On SERVPRO Of North Nashville To Help Me Recover My Electronics And Appliances?
Water-damaged electronics can present a serious hazard. Do not attempt to turn on or operate any electrical device you suspect has been damaged by water. We will coordinate the restoration of your electronics, including:
- Television sets
- DVD players
- Computers
- And more
The key to restoring electronics is taking prompt action to prevent further damage. We start by cleaning the exterior of electronic devices to help stop further corrosion and damage. Electronics will be cleaned and inspected by a qualified electronics technician.

What Do I Need To Know About Structural Drying After Flooding In My Home Or Business?
7/17/2023 (Permalink)
We've all had the unpleasant experience of discovering that our basement or laundry room floor is wet due to a plumbing issue - by walking into a puddle unexpectedly. Or a recent flood or storm turned your property into a quagmire! If this has happened to you, you're likely thinking about how to clean up the mess and whether structural drying will be necessary.
Today we will discuss the basics of structural drying restoration and why it is essential to help you make an educated decision.
The structural drying process is simple: excess moisture must be removed from materials to achieve a sufficiently dry standard or goal. Thus, drying wet buildings involves extracting moisture trapped within building materials (for example, drywall, dimensional lumber, concrete, etc.)
What Four Principles Define Structural Drying?
- Eliminating water. Drying structures is based on water extraction as the first step. Although several extraction methods exist, physical extraction releases water the fastest. In this state, liquid water extraction works more efficiently than air movers and dehumidifiers.
- Evaporation Phase. The remaining moisture is evaporated with high-velocity air movers after the water has been physically removed. The market has recently expanded to include air movers as structural drying equipment tailored explicitly to fast structural drying. Their low energy consumption improves the efficiency of air circulation.
- Balancing evaporation. The moisture in the floor and furniture disappears as it dries and evaporates, and mold evaporates into the air as water vapor. However, the room would still be damaged without dehumidifiers to remove the moisture. Mold growth after water damage would undoubtedly result from a delayed drying process.
- Managing the temperature. After structural drying and dehumidification, in the first 36 to 48 hours, the temperature of the air should be between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The evaporation process is helped by air warmer than 70 degrees Fahrenheit, as cooler air slows evaporation. The heat that exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit hinders dehumidifiers' operation.
Why Is Structural A Necessary Part Of Water Damage Restoration?
Professional structural drying and water damage restoration offer numerous benefits, including:
- Increasing efficiency. Professionals handle the structural drying of your home, which is a fast and efficient process. You can expect them to continue working until the flood damage restoration is completed so your house can return to normal as soon as possible.
- Ensuring no secondary damage occurs. Another component of the structural drying process is preventing mold growth and bacteria from spreading, so you will not have to worry about lingering moisture after your home has been thoroughly dried. A professional water damage restoration company will have the right equipment and processes to get you back to normal.
- Non-destructive process. Professionals' structural drying technique helps protect critical building materials by preserving their integrity during water damage recovery. Whether wood, drywall, or other materials in the area are affected by water, the professionals will take every precaution to keep your property safe from further damage.

What Do I Need To Know About Gutters And Water Damage In My Nashville Home?
6/5/2023 (Permalink)
Most houses have rain gutters, but it can be hard to tell what role they play in maintaining your home’s exterior. You may even wonder if gutters are necessary. They are, and here are some reasons why.
A gutter system directs water away from your home, helping prevent mold, mildew, dangerous water buildup, and other water damage around your home’s foundation over time.
Gutters hang off your roof and catch rainwater as it runs down the surface. Your gutter system then channels that water toward the edges of your roof and into vertical sectionals called downspouts. Your downspouts might empty into a tank or barrel for gardening or into a drainage system to move water away from your home or into a plastic extension.
When Are Rain Gutters Necessary?
In most cases, rain gutters are not required by law. However, gutters are essential in some situations to keep your home in working order. Read about some of these situations below:
- You’ll want a gutter system if your home sits at the bottom of hills or other upward slopes. Without one, rainwater from these slopes could build up around your home’s foundation rather than moving away from it.
- You should invest in rain gutters if your home is near clay-rich soil. Like red clay soil or clay loam soils, clay-rich soils absorb and retain water when wet. This issue may direct water toward your home’s foundation. The clay acts as a pipeline, continuously delivering water to the same spot. Your gutter system will counteract this problem by draining water into a ground-based gutter line.
- Without gutters, water can enter your home and cause basement flooding; this could be especially serious if you have a finished basement since there could be water damage to your belongings. Such occurrences could be easily avoided with a simple gutter installation.
- If your roof’s overhang fits close to your home’s siding, frequent rain will cause trenches to form where the water builds up. Often, that rainwater remains close to the foundation once it’s absorbed into the ground, causing severe and costly damage over time. Without gutters, you may also experience water damage to your siding.

Winter weather in Middle Tennessee involves rain, snow, and ice, and flooding is not uncommon. From weakening a structure - such as columns, walls, fencing, and steps - to allowing the perfect environment for a mold infestation to appear, a flooding event of any size can lead to severe consequences.
One of the best ways to protect your North Nashville home from water damage is to be prepared in advance. We’ve got some helpful tips for you today on ways to prevent water damage.
What Are Some Prevention Tips That Will Keep My North Nashville Home Safe From Water Damage?
Some best practices for water damage prevention to your home are:
- Maintaining the condition of your home is smart. Check for areas that come in contact with rain and wind, such as roofing, and be sure to complete necessary repairs right away. Windows and doors must be kept in good condition and sealed well before wet weather.
- If you live near a river or creek or have drainage ditches on your property, you will want to take the necessary precautions to ensure that rising waters won’t get near your property, such as constructing berms or using sandbags. If your drainage ditches are clogged, they may need to be handled by city or county authorities, so find your contact people and reach out to them for assistance.
- While checking your roof, you should also pay close attention to the gutters. Pull leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to avoid clogs that prevent rainwater from flowing. How Do I Spot Water Damage In The Bathroom Of My North Nashville Home?
Unseen water damage can lead to several problems in your North Nashville home. A small, unchecked drip can create the perfect living conditions for a mold colony while pooling water in your walls very well could cause your structure to become unsafe - and you might not even be aware of it!

- If you start seeing discoloration or other types of stains on your walls, floors, or ceilings, it is often a sign that there is a slow and persistent water leak problem.

As a wise North Nashville commercial business owner, we know you want to be ready for any disaster. Flooding can be dangerous, no matter if it’s weather-related or due to equipment failure. Being prepared can keep your business and your workforce safe both before - and after - flooding occurs.
What Are The Best Steps To Take To Protect My Business And Workforce In Case Of A Weather-Related Flood?
- Even if you think the risk of flooding is small, it’s essential to be vigilant; understand your location’s potential exposure. You can reference the NOAA Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service’s quarterly updates and maps to determine what areas of Middle Tennessee are at higher flooding risk during certain times of the year. Knowing the potential rates of rising waters and how long it would take to drain off will be essential for you as a business owner.
- Keep all copies of your insurance documents and other critical business information in a flood-safe location. Using the cloud to store business-related information will be essential to avoid the potential loss of documentation.
- Prepare your location before a weather-related flood. Investing in a sump pump could help minimize damages, while maintaining gutters, drains, and roofing is also helpful. Anchoring any fuel tanks is also an excellent step to take. If your commercial property is low-lying, invest in sandbags and other methods to stop floodwaters.
- Create a flood evacuation route and share it with your workforce, so they know how to get themselves and any customers to the higher and safer ground if necessary. Invest in an emergency kit and keep it well-stocked in case people get stranded in the building.
What Are Some Best Practices If My Commercial Location Does Experience Flooding?
- Make sure you know where everyone is and that they are safe. Do not encourage anyone to come to work if it is dangerous to do so, and keep people onsite if it isn’t safe to travel home.
- Contact your local fire department and police, and let them know the status of your property and everyone involved.
- If you have standing water inside or around your buildings, turn off all electricity and unplug appliances, computers, and other machinery.
- Stay connected to local news stations to get updates and important information. The most important thing is that everyone is safe.

How Do I Check My North Nashville Home For Water Leaks?
3/28/2022 (Permalink)
Doing regular inspections of the areas in your North Nashville home that are most likely to develop water damage will allow you to take care of issues before they can become much more serious. Damp areas in any building will attract a mold infestation, structural issues, and unsightly conditions.
What Are The Top Three Areas I Need To Investigate For Water Damage In My North Nashville Home?
- During your bathroom cleaning, check for leaks. Look in the least traveled spots, such as behind the toilet and under the sink. If you discover a leak, it will need to be fully dried after finding the source and have that repaired first.
- Your kitchen is used more than any other area in your home. Keep an eye out for spills and leaks and clean them up immediately to ensure that wet areas are not attracting mold spores. You can experience water damage under the sink and refrigerator without you noticing, so when you inspect these spots, use a flashlight and make sure you see every corner clearly.
- Your laundry room has spots that are not cleaned as often, such as behind the washing machine. An undetected leak here can create huge issues down the road. Add that to the humidity in the air and you have a recipe for the establishment of a mold colony, buckling floorboards, peeling walls, and more. Pull the washer and dryer out from the wall regularly and make sure the areas behind them are clean, dry, and disinfected.
Hall closets, your garage, and/or basement are some other areas where a water leak can develop.
What Are Three Telltale Signs Of Water Leaks In My North Nashville Home Or Business?
Here are a few signs that will let you know right away that you have a water leak.
- A visible leak with dripping water is the single most obvious way to know you have an issue. It could also appear as a watermark, where the paint is darker than the surrounding area. Flaking, bubbling, or cracking paint are also signs that you may need to schedule water damage restoration, as is visible mold, which can be light green to dark black in color.
- Mold has a strong, musty odor which can also irritate sensitive populations, and when you detect that smell you know you have some damp conditions that need to be managed.
- Another way to know that you have a leak somewhere is if your water bill is suddenly much higher without an obvious explanation. That’s when you can start inspecting areas of your home for wet spots, a damp smell, or sounds of running water.

What Are The Steps For Water Damage Restoration In Nashville?
12/6/2021 (Permalink)
The damage that can be done to your North Nashville home or business by water can be extensive and may require the help of a professional water damage remediation specialist like SERVPRO. Water can do more than just ruin furniture and textiles; it can seep into walls and flooring and create unsafe and unhealthy conditions. If water damage is left untreated you can find yourself with a mold infestation.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE SERVPRO WATER DAMAGE PROCESS?
Every water damage situation is different and requires a unique solution, but the general SERVPRO process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” water damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact: We will ask several questions regarding your water damage emergency when you call. These questions will help us determine what equipment and resources to bring, including how many trained SERVPRO Professionals may be needed.
Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment. When responding to a water damage emergency, we begin with a detailed inspection of your home or property, including a damage assessment. At this stage, our professionals will determine the scope of the damage and develop an appropriate plan of action.
Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction: After the inspection and damage assessment step, the water extraction process begins. This step removes the majority of the water. We use powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property.
Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification: Once we remove the excess water, the floors and walls may appear dry, but a quick inspection will reveal they are wet to the touch. Nearly all building materials, like wood, drywall, and flooring materials, are porous and retain water. This water can cause materials to break down, warp, or cause mold damage.
Step 5: Cleaning and Repair: Your walls, flooring, and ceiling will most likely require professional cleaning services. In addition to cleaning your property’s structure, we will clean your furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable belongings damaged by the water. Most flooding and water damage also require professional odor removal and deodorization since wet materials have a distinct odor.
Step 6: Restoration: Restoration, the final step, is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Can Water Damage The Foundation Of My North Nashville Building?
9/13/2021 (Permalink)
A typical building foundation will be a thick slab of poured cement set into the ground or heavy mortar blocks, and it doesn’t sound as though it would be vulnerable to the effects of water damage. However, water can negatively affect your foundation both directly and indirectly and make expensive foundation repairs necessary. The water can seep into your North Nashville home or business and cause problems indoors, as well.
What Are Some Ways Water Can Damage The Foundation Of My North Nashville Location?
- Rainwater will usually penetrate the ground quickly and be carried away. Still, if the soil is already saturated - as can often be the case during rainy seasons - it can add to the pressure already coming to bear against the foundational walls. This pressure may create cracks and gaps, allowing water to seep into your basement or crawl spaces. Such conditions can then cause the foundation walls to tip or rotate inward, requiring major foundation rehab work.
- Suppose the local water table rises near the surface. In that case, it may push against the underside of the foundation - a condition called “hydrostatic pressure” - and the force of rising groundwater is powerful and continuous. Such a situation can infiltrate water into your basement through cracks and joints that widen over time, even sometimes permeating your solid concrete.
- Pooling water on the surface around the perimeter of your location will eventually degrade concrete and mortar foundations and is often caused by landscaping that slopes down toward the building. Rainwater will then pool around the foundation and seep in. Other damages can be caused by clogged, overflowing rain gutters that direct water to the ground or downspouts that allow discharged water to flow back toward the house.
How Can I Protect My North Nashville Property From Water Damage To Its Foundation?
There are a few preventive measures you can take to protect your house or business from foundational damage:
- Clean rain gutters regularly, and replace both your gutters and rain-spouts ahead of wet weather if they look like they won’t function properly.
- Adjust any landscaping that slopes towards your building to direct water away from it instead.
- Ensure that your foundation is always visible. At least six inches of foundation should be visible for brick or cement exteriors, while eight inches of foundation should be visible for wood exteriors. If soil, mulch, or other materials are too high, moisture can more easily penetrate the top of your foundation, creating some of the above issues.

My Basement Flooded; What Now?
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
When you discover your basement flooded, you can be left wondering what in the world you need to do now! Such an event can create so many problems since basements are so often the place where important items are stored. Books, photo items, and textiles can end up completely ruined if they are soaked - but keep in mind that a professional restoration company like our team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville will have the training, equipment, and products needed to recover many of these kinds of items.
If you are asking yourself “What now?”, we have some answers!
TAKE ACTION
Act fast if you find that your basement is being flooded, and make sure you put safety first. Call your power company, electrician, and/or your professional water damage cleanup team immediately so that the appropriate steps can be taken to manage the dangerous combination of water and electricity in this situation. These professionals have the tools and training to handle it all safely. They will be able to determine the steps you can take in beginning your cleanup process without increasing the risk of fire damage from any dangerous scenarios, such as exposed wires, and more.
SOME CLEANUP TIPS.
A shop-vac can clean up smaller amounts of standing water while using a dehumidifier or fans will circulate needed air. Circulated air discourages mold growth and mildew, and that’s something you definitely want to avoid! Your air conditioning can be a big help here, too, so it should stay running throughout the building as long as that can be done safely. You will want to get a professional opinion before using window air conditioning units.
STOP MOLD AND MILDEW.
To discourage mold and mildew from establishing colonies on damp surfaces, scrub them with a solution of one cup bleach to one gallon of water while wearing gloves and protective eyewear. Make sure you keep the space you are in well ventilated while you are doing tasks that involve cleaning solutions.
PERSONAL ITEMS.
You can actually save valuable documents and papers by placing them in the freezer if they have been soaked. This may stop the growth of mildew or deterioration; if the worst happens, remember that SERVPRO is fully equipped to recover documents that have been affected by a disaster. Storing important items in your basement may be unavoidable, so using air- and water-tight plastic bins to protect your items against a flooding event will help you in the future to protect your valuables from a basement flood.
Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we are always prepared to help whenever you are dealing with water damage and fire damage, and we are mold remediation specialists, too. We handle large cleanup projects for commercial business owners and smaller projects for area homeowners, and we can get your premises Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned! Top Sources For Commercial Water Damage
4/19/2021 (Permalink)
Water can cause a lot of damage and the repairs will often be costly and time-consuming. In some instances, you find yourself unable to conduct your commercial business properly due to the aftermath of water damage. Some of the top sources for commercial water damage can include:
WEATHER
Steady rains, tornadoes, hurricanes, or ice and snow, all bring water that can cause a lot of problems. Make an inspection around your place of business; are you prepared for wet weather? Take note of weather stripping and poorly fitting doors and windows and the drainage for your parking areas and entryways as well as all warehousing and manufacturing outbuildings. Be sure to stay on top of the weather projections for your area so that you know what to expect.
EQUIPMENT
A broken or misdirected landscaping sprinkler can easily create problems by sending large amounts of water to the wrong places, and that’s just one of the types of equipment that can be found in a commercial business involving water. Your business may use machinery that requires water, such as for a laundromat, restaurant, hotel, and in such businesses, water damage from equipment failures can be extensive.
PIPES
Burst pipes and mains, as well as hoses, are yet another top source for commercial water damage. Maintaining fittings and exposed piping will help to keep flooding and the consequent water damage from occurring, while water mains are the responsibility of the city or county where your commercial business is located.
LEAKS
Leaks, both large and small, can cause a lot of water damage. A small leak that goes unnoticed can create serious issues, and in addition to the loss of property and the need for repairs, you may find yourself with a mold issue in your commercial property.
If you have sustained water damages to your home or commercial property, the team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville can be onsite right away with all the skills and equipment needed to get you back to work as soon as possible. We have the expertise to handle water and fire damage and specialize in mold remediation. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, as well. What To Do If You See Signs Of Mold In Your Home
3/1/2021 (Permalink)
Maintenance on our belongings is part of life if we want to keep things in good working order, and our homes are - of course - no different. Today we’re going to talk about mold and what to do if you see signs of mold in your home, as this is one of the most difficult maintenance issues to handle. It can be a serious issue and impossible to completely eradicate once it gets established, so engaging the help of a professional mold remediation expert can be one of the most important steps you take in the event that mold has started a colony in any of your living spaces.
Mold spores are microscopic and they are everywhere. They float in the air, so they are able to enter your home through windows and doors or HVAC systems, and in damp conditions, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Mold often produces a strong musty odor, so that odor will alert you to areas in your home that have developed a problem. Keeping the humidity level in your home below 45 percent can be a big help in blocking the growth of toxic mold in your house, as well.
The scientific name for the mold that is often called black mold is Stachybotrys chartarum. It can produce both health effects. However, many other types of mold can produce those same health effects, so it’s best to treat any mold with caution. Do not touch or disturb any mold found, and be sure to stay out of affected areas.
Here are some steps to take that will help you both identify signs of mold in your home and prevent an infestation:
LEAKS
Leaks always need to be cleaned up and dried as soon as possible to prevent water damage and mold growth so you will want to be vigilant here. Keep an eye open for stains on ceilings and walls - telltale signs of leaks that are happening behind the scenes. Keep rain gutters clean and in good repair, and make sure water is properly diverted from the foundations and low-lying areas of your house.
MANAGE DAMP
Mold grows where it’s wet and can take over in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Even leaving wet items lying around the house, such as beach towels and swimsuits, can create a problem, so make sure those who live in your home keep wet items off of the flooring. If there are large spills these will need to be sponged up and dried completely, as well. If you see that tell-tale black dust where wet items were left, you can use a bleach/water mixture to get rid of it. Carpeting and textiles will probably need a professional touch, however.
VENTILATION
If you experience that musty smell whenever you go indoors, you may have a mold situation developing. Make sure your home is properly ventilated, and ensure that any appliances that produce moisture are vented to the outdoors. Using a dehumidifier is always helpful, as well; today’s energy-efficient homes can actually hold moisture indoors, so monitoring and managing the humidity levels in your home will help you keep the atmosphere healthy.
INDOOR VEGETATION
Mold is likely to grow on houseplants, and you will know it is happening if you see white or black dust on their leaves. Keep your indoor vegetation clean and dry by wiping down leaves periodically. Your local plant nursery will carry products that can help you here.
MOLD-RESISTANT MATERIALS/PRODUCTS
Whenever you repair or renovate your home, using mold-resistant products such as drywall or sheetrock can help you prevent mold infestations in the future.
Many types of mold can cause adverse reactions, so you should contact us here at SERVPRO of North Nashville right away no matter what type of mold you find in your home. You can actually experience many types of mold in the same house or structure, some of which are toxic. The help of a professional mold remediation company will be vital in this situation. Keep in mind that we handle water damage, fire damage, and clean up projects of all sizes, and we can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, as well. This franchise is individually owned and operated.
Can Hardwood Floors Be Restored After Water Damage?
1/19/2021 (Permalink)
Any time water saturates hardwood, that wood will absorb the water through its pores and this causes warping and discoloration. If your hardwood floors have undergone a flood of some kind, you may be wondering if they can be restored. The answer is yes, and here are the steps to follow to do just that:
Remove Water. Soak up all standing water as quickly as possible. The first 24 hours are critical and if you can remove the water and dry your floors completely, you may be able to avoid serious and irreversible damage.
Refinish. You will need to refinish the wood, beginning with sanding. This repair can bring your floors back to pre-flood condition and will save you all the time and money involved in having your damaged flooring removed and new flooring installed.
Preventive Measures.
- The first thing you can do yourself is to find the source of water and take the necessary steps to stop the flow if this is related to a pipe or appliance on your premises.
- If you have carpeting on top of your hardwood floor, remove the carpet and the padding immediately, as well as any other soaked items that may be in contact with your wood surfaces.
- You can use a shop-vac to extract as much water as you can; if you don’t have one on your premises they are readily available for rent at any hardware store. You should rely on the professionals if the amount of water is really extensive, however.
- Prevent mold and preserve your hardwood floors by using a non-sudsy disinfectant, and then vacuum again to remove standing water.
- Run your heater, air conditioner, or dehumidifier constantly to keep the air dry in the affected areas. This will help to prevent unpleasant odors and may provide a deterrent to mold, too.
Professional Help. Contact a professional water damage restoration service if you have experienced extensive water damage. They are experts in this area and will have the personnel and equipment necessary to get your water damage managed both quickly and properly. Remember that your restoration professionals can help you with carpet-cleaning after a water damage event, too. If your area has suffered a weather disaster, these companies will probably have a waitlist, so be sure to reach out as soon as you can in this situation.
The team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville has the skills and equipment necessary to get your floors back to pre-damage condition, and we are always here to help with repairs and renovations to any area of your property if they have been affected by water damage. We also handle fire damage, and we are mold remediation experts, too. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned. Ask us how!
What To Do If A Pipe Bursts In Your Business
12/1/2020 (Permalink)
Your equipment, machinery, and supplies on your business premises can be destroyed or severely damaged if a pipe bursts and there is flooding from that occurrence. Even the health of your workforce can be compromised if the resulting mess is not cleaned up properly. SERVPRO is here to help you if this happens.
You may be wondering what to do if a pipe bursts in your business:
Turn off the water flow right away when you suspect a pipe has broken; the stop tap is on the water main typically located under the main sink or where the main service pipe connects to your building. Turn off all electrical components at this time to prevent shocks, keeping people away from dangerous areas.
Once the main water switch is off, drain the pipes by running cold water through the faucets, and be sure to flush each toilet at least once. When there is no more running tap water, the leak will stop.
After draining all the excess water, locate the burst pipe and inspect the damage, and before you purchase parts or fittings, consider where the pipe is. You may be able to fix a small leak on the spot and prevent further damage while saving money. If you use commercial tape or a chemical bonding agent, keep an eye on your repair job in case it bursts later and creates even more issues.
Fixing a rupture or crack in non-main pipes is usually fairly simple, but when it comes to bigger issues, you will want to call in professionals. Regardless of the damage or size of the break, a major water pipe will take more time and effort to replace because it holds more water and leads to additional connections.
If your walls and floors became saturated during the flooding, contact a professional water restoration company. Simply using fans and open windows to dry a soaked area may not be enough to prevent mold and mildew from developing and this could cause serious health issues for your staff.
The team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville is here to help any time your business experiences damage from flooding. We are also experts in fire damage recovery and mold remediation and prevention, and we can get your business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too; ask us how!
What To Do In Case of a Water Leak In Your Bathroom
10/13/2020 (Permalink)
As a home or business owner, you may experience a leak in your bathroom that has shown up suddenly with no warning, or you may also find that you have a small leak that has been present for a while that has also become a problem. In either case, a water leak can cause a lot of damage to any home or business.
Today we are sharing some things you can do in case of a water leak in your bathroom:
The most vital step is to find the bathroom leak, so you will need to inspect your bathroom for signs of water damage. Check the areas around your tub, the tub drain and its overflow, your shower door, and the toilet. Inspect all the drywall in the affected room or area for signs damage, such as buckling, discoloration, and warping. Take note of any unusual or unpleasant odors, since this can mean that you may also need to handle a mold infestation.
If you find signs of water leaking from the base of either your tub or toilet, you can scratch out old grout and add new caulking in the joint between the floor and the tub or toilet. You will also want to apply a bead of clear silicone caulk to the joint between the floor and the affected fixture.
If you discover that your shower is the source of the trouble, you will first want to take steps to determine exactly where the issue is coming from. The most common problem is often that the seal at the base of the shower door needs to be replaced; you should be able to complete this project yourself with no trouble. If your shower is older and needs to be replaced, call your local professionals for help here.
Sometimes there is an issue developing under a sink. This is an easy situation to miss since we don’t usually look under the sink very often. 3 Tips For Dealing With Commercial Water Damage
8/31/2020 (Permalink)
Being aware of situations that may end in commercial water damage is the best way to prevent these things from happening. Take the time to check for signs of any issues that could spell trouble, especially after wet weather. Damage to basements or the foundational or low-lying areas of a building are extremely important to repair as soon as possible so that larger structural and property damages can be avoided. Issues of this kind can end up costing a business owner both time and money.
Here are 3 tips for dealing with commercial water damage:
- NOTICE DETAILS. In a finished basement or a warehouse, surface finish or paint might be peeling away or appear discolored, so taking the time to notice details like changes in textures or colors of surfaces will alert you to a problem quickly. Check for bowing in the walls, which can be a result of long-term seepage. You will want to look for a white, salty substance that can appear on foundational walls that’s known as “efflorescence.” This will tell you how high any water has risen from the base. If flooring is swollen or removed from the subfloor, that is another indicator of water damages.
- KEEP UP WITH REPAIRS. Cracking can occur in the foundation and/or the floor, and it is often due to water damage. Look for cracks in window seals and door panes, as well. Handle any repair issues immediately, especially those that could allow water damage to happen in the future. Replace appliances that have seen better days, and inspect hoses and pipes regularly; don’t wait until disaster happens to start.
- FIND THE SOURCE OF SMELLS. Odors are an indicator that there is an excess water problem. Oftentimes, it’s mold or mildew that causes those smells, which means you have water damage on your hands. This can cost a commercial property owner a lot of money, both in remediation repairs and in possible loss of business or business disruption. Keep drainage areas well-maintained in expectation of summer storms; directing water away from your buildings will stop any problems before they even start.
Once you have found that you have experienced water damage, it’s probably time to call a professional cleaning company. They are experienced and trained to handle spaces that have extensive damage from excess water due to leaky pipes, flooding, and weather-related damages.
The team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville is the team to call for cleanups and repairs to your commercial property after water damage or other disasters, and we’re experts in mold prevention and remediation. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too.
What To Do When Your Basement Floods
7/14/2020 (Permalink)
If your basement is affected by a flood as a result of stormy weather or malfunctioning machinery or appliances, it can create a lot of problems for the homeowner. Basements are very often used for storage, and items such as books, photos, electronics, and textiles can be difficult to manage when they are water-logged and damaged. We here at SERVPRO of North Nashville have some tips to help you out!
Act quickly to handle the situation, but make sure safety is always your first concern. If you have a large amount of standing water in your basement, call your power company, electrician, and/or your professional water damage cleanup team immediately, while keeping everyone away from the area to avoid injury. Exposed wires in water are not to be tampered with, for obvious reasons! Experienced professionals will be able to determine the best, and safest, steps to take in beginning the cleanup process without increasing the risk of fire damage from the exposed wires..
While you are waiting for the pros, you can do a few things that can be helpful. A shop-vac can clean up smaller amounts of standing water while using dehumidifiers and fans will move air around, and that discourages mold growth and mildew. Make sure to keep them at least 8 inches away from walls to allow for the best circulation. Your air conditioning can be a big help here, too, so it should stay running in the rest of the house. Don’t turn on a window unit in any basement windows if it’s flooded.
Scrub hard surfaces with a solution of one cup bleach to one gallon of water while wearing gloves and protective eyewear. Remember to keep the room ventilated, too.
If your valuable documents or papers have been affected, you can actually save them by placing them in the freezer. This may stop the growth of mildew or deterioration until you can take a better look at them. Storing important items in the basement may not be your best practice, but if you don’t have space anywhere else, then using air- and water-tight plastic bins should help protect your items if your basement floods again.
Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we are always ready to help if you are affected by water damage, fire damage, or other disastrous events. We handle large cleanup projects for commercial business owners and smaller projects for area homeowners. We’re mold remediation specialists, too!
How Quickly Can Mold Spread After Water Damage?
5/26/2020 (Permalink)
Mold growth is a serious problem and when left untreated it can cause a multitude of issues, for your home and health. What is mold? It is a fungus made of decomposed organic material, and in small quantities, it is not usually dangerous. However, it needs to be removed and prevented before growing to an unsafe size. One of the biggest problems with mold is that it can begin to grow in as little as 24 hours after water damage. It grows well in dark and damp environments, but if your home has recently suffered from water damage, then your home is a viable location for mold growth. Besides moisture, mold needs at least three other things to grow: food (any organic material), humid temperature and environment, and oxygen. Has your home recently experienced water damage, and you are afraid of mold growth? Here are some tips to fight it off before it starts:
- Remove any remaining water and dry areas immediately. Special vacuums are available designed to suck up water, but you can also use traditional tools such as a mop and bucket. If the water came from a natural flood or sewer backup, do not attempt to remove it unless you have adequate protective equipment. This kind of water usually has a cocktail of contaminants that you do not want to touch. Contact the necessary professionals, such as SERVPRO of North Nashville, if you are unable to remove it yourself.
- Remove any furniture, carpet, and other items not bolted down from the area inflicted with water damage. If they are damp, you can dry them yourself by leaving out in the sun or by using a heater. Mold will grow underneath these carpets if you do not dry them out.
- Dry out the affected areas with fans and dehumidifiers, and if the weather outside is sunny and dry, then consider opening any windows and doors to help air out your home. It is also recommended to dry any other wet surfaces with a rag. Eliminate any excess moisture as soon as possible to minimize the occurrence of mold.
- During this process, be wary of any spores, which can be green, brown, or black. Keep an out on the affected area by looking for any visual signs of growth or odd smells.
- If you do find mold, remove it carefully and completely. If you do not remove all of it at once then there is a high possibility that it will regrow. Get rid of any furniture or other items that have begun to grow mold. Clean and sanitize different surfaces and all possible sources of mold. Over-the-counter cleaning solutions are available at your local hardware store that can eliminate bacteria and prevent mold from growing.
- Try to keep the room’s humidity low in order to keep the mold from growing. You need to keep the room at a low humidity level for at least a few days after this to prevent it.
Dealing with mold can be dangerous. Even with these steps, it is possible for mold to grow back when you are not careful enough. Black mold is even more dangerous, and if you ever encounter mold or black mold within your home then reach out to the proper professionals to handle it so that you do not endanger yourself or your family. Feel free to call us, SERVPRO of North Nashville, for your mold remediation and restoration needs. We have highly-trained specialists who are always willing to help you remove mold from your home!
Protect Your Home By Cleaning Your Gutters
5/13/2020 (Permalink)
Have you considered cleaning out your gutters? While cleaning them may seem like a daunting task, it is a chore that is beneficial for your home and can save you money. If you still need convincing, here are some more reasons why you should regularly clean your gutters:
- When your gutters and downspouts are clogged with leaves and other debris, it may cause water damage. Rainwater cannot drain properly when there is a blockage in the gutters. This will cause the water to overflow and create damage to the interior and exterior of your building or home. Excess water can also create a leaky or rotten roof.
- By leaving leaves trapped in your gutter, it becomes a desirable home for different kinds of pests, from rodents to insects. Prevent a pest infestation by removing those leaves!
- The excess water can also pool around the foundation of your building if it is blocked from traveling away from your home. This pool of water can crack your foundation in the winter when it expands and freezes in the cold weather.
- By taking early preventative measures, gutter cleaning can help minimize the possibility of having to replace or repair your roof. Cleaning your gutters regularly will save you money.
- Debris buildup can also eventually lead to sagging gutters, mold growth, and wet basements, all of which can be very costly.
To prevent the worst from happening, clean your gutters! Make sure to clean them at least twice a year, in the spring and fall, and clean even more if your home or building is situated around trees. Tools you will need for gutter cleaning include a ladder, a hose, and a scoop or trowel. When using a ladder, practice the utmost safety, and if you do not feel comfortable, do not hesitate to call us, the professionals, here at SERVPRO of North Nashville!
- It is recommended that you wear gloves while cleaning for ease and convenience. Have two buckets alongside you, one to hold the debris, and the other to hold your tools.
- You should begin cleaning near a downspout. Confirm that your ladder is secure and on level ground before you start to climb it.
- Remove any large debris such as leaves and twigs by hand, then for the more compact debris use your gutter scoop.
- Remove and clean the downspout strainers. Then flush out the gutter with water, using your hose, and starting at the end, opposite of the downspout. Replace the downspout strainers when finished.
- Once the gutters are cleaned, check the downspouts for any lodged debris. If any remain, use the hose again to spray down the spout.
- Use the hose one more time to flush the gutters and check for proper water flow and drainage. Ensure that there are not any leaks or standing water by the downspout. Then make sure all gutters are secure and firmly attached to the house.
Now that you are done with gutter cleaning, do not forget to repeat this at least once more during the year. While a relatively simple process, you must always remember to carry out the best safety practices when operating from tall ladders. If you require assistance in gutter cleaning, feel free to contact the professionals. Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we are experts at any home project and we are more than happy to help!
Water Damage Recovery Tips for Your Hardwood Floors
3/17/2020 (Permalink)
An unfortunate flood or spill can easily damage your hardwood floors, but fixing them is not impossible. However, time is not on your side. You will need to move quickly to preserve them and prevent permanent water damage and mold growth. The presence of moisture encourages the growth of the mold, and hardwood flooring will absorb moisture more easily. Work thoroughly and with speed when trying to recover your hardwood floors. Here are tips to follow when your hardwood floors experience water damage:
- If the source of water has not been stopped yet, be sure to do that immediately. Take precautions and wear proper protective gear.
- Prevent any possibility of electrocution by turning off the power to the affected room until the water has been taken care of.
- Remove any items from the affected area and move them to a dry spot.
- Open any doors and windows to allow for ventilation in the room. This will help the floor dry faster. Fans, dehumidifiers, and heaters can also help with drying the room.
- Remove the surface water by using a vacuum to remove as much of the excess as possible.
- Scrub the floors to get rid of any leftover debris and mud. Use mild detergent and clean water with a brush and clean thoroughly until all dirt is gone.
- Leave the fans going, and continue to dry the floor. Depending on how serious the damage is, the drying process can take from up to a week or more. Dehumidifiers, fans, and heaters can help speed up the process, but do not attempt to dry it too quickly or the floor can crack. Do not apply direct heat to the floor either, as this can cause other issues as well.
Even with all of your efforts, properly cleaning and removing moisture from hardwood floors is difficult. Mold can still grow if not properly treated. If the floors are too badly damaged then they might have to be replaced altogether. But if you call SERVPRO of North Nashville today, we can assess the damage and help go in the right direction of fixing your floors! Our Commercial and Residential Restoration and Cleaning Services are not only fast, but also effective. We can fix the damage before it escalates.
Steps to Take If Your Hotel Floods
2/4/2020 (Permalink)
Has your hotel been affected by flooding? This is a serious issue and the right steps need to be taken to ensure the safety of the residents along with the integrity of the building. If there are high levels of flooding in your hotel, call SERVPRO of North Nashville immediately to ensure that there is no additional damage being made. If the levels of flooding are not severe, here are the steps to follow so your hotel can be up and running in no time. While it is hard to be prepared for flooding, know that it can happen at any place and at any time.
- Evacuate everyone from the premises as soon as possible once the flooding starts. Find a dry, safe spot outside of the hotel occupy while waiting for the flooding to stop. Make sure everyone is accounted for. If flooding is caused by a natural disaster, call the authorities or listen to the local news to find a temporary shelter and relocate to that shelter when possible.
- Call 911 if anyone needs medical attention. Ensure that everyone who was evacuated is safe.
- Attempt to find the source of the flooding if it is not from a natural disaster. Stop it at the source, and if possible, try to turn it off or seal it up. Turning off the main water valve may also solve the issue.
- Turn off the electricity, but do not attempt to reach the fuse box if you have to walk through water. Water is a conductor of electricity and you could be shocked. If you cannot reach the fuse box without stepping on water, call an electrician.
- Document everything: take photos and videos of all the affected areas. Use this information for insurance purposes.
Once the flooding has stopped, you can start the clean-up process.
- Do not touch the water without the proper equipment as it may be contaminated with sewage or other hazardous material. If you have to enter the establishment, at the very least wear waders and waterproof boots.
- This will be a long, difficult process. All of the water has to be removed, then a wet vacuum or a pump can be used to dispose of any standing water.
- Attempt to salvage any items that were not seriously damaged. Do not eat any food that has been contaminated by floodwater.
- If the water damage is not too bad, dry the space out with fans and dehumidifiers. Anything that was touched by the water also needs to be disinfected.
Warm, wet spaces are a breeding ground for mold growth, such as a flooded hotel. Act as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth.
- The property needs to be as dry as possible to prevent mold spores from growing. Once it starts growing, it is difficult to remove. This includes toxic black mold that is dangerous to one’s health. To avoid mold from growing, keep the affected areas as dry as possible and treat it with a strong cleaner, such as a bleach solution.
- If it is not humid outside, open any windows and doors to let fresh air in and circulate.
Flooding does not mean the end of the world. Even if your hotel was flooded, it can still be salvaged. If the damage is critical or you are not capable of fixing the issue by yourself, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of North Nashville to aid you in returning your hotel back to peak condition.
